Aerion Supersonic Selects GE Aviation as Supplier of Power Supply Systems for AS2 Business Aircraft

RENO, Nev., December 16, 2019 / PRNewswire / – Aerion Supersonic, the leader in supersonic technology, today announced that GE Aviation has been selected as the supplier of electrical power systems for its AS2 supersonic business jet.

GE Aviation will design and develop the power supply system for the AS2. The system includes the generation, distribution, conversion and storage of electrical energy.

In 2018, Aerion announced that GE’s Affinityâ„¢, the first civilian supersonic engine for 55 years, will equip the AS2. The Affinity engine is optimized with GE technology to deliver exceptional and balanced performance in supersonic and subsonic flights.

“We are delighted to expand our collaboration with Aerion and leverage our extensive electrical power expertise for this state-of-the-art supersonic AS2 program,” said Brad Mottier, vice president and general manager of GE Aviation for commercial and general aviation and integrated systems. “In addition to the GE Affinity engine, our power supply system will be designed, integrated and optimized to provide exceptional overall system performance for Aerion and its customers. ”

Design of the AS2 power supply system and initial integration planning work will be carried out at GE’s Power Integration Center (EPIC) in Cheltenham, United Kingdom, with final integration and procurement at GE’s Integrated Power Supply Systems Center (EPISCenter), the power integration headquarters, located at Dayton, Ohio.

“We conducted an in-depth business study, analyzing multiple suppliers and multiple power generation and distribution architectures.” said Aerion CEO Tom Vice. “As a result, we have chosen GE Aviation as our partner for the AS2 power supply system. We are delighted to extend our exceptional relationship with GE.”

Aerion’s AS2 is the very first privately-built supersonic commercial aircraft. Designed to be inherently environmentally friendly, the AS2 is the first supersonic aircraft capable of accepting 100% synthetic fuel. It is also the first to be designed without post-combustion. The 12-passenger business jet is expected to begin flight tests in 2024.
