Hell Troll: How to Build an EMP Mini Generator to Disrupt Electronic Gadgets

What is EMP?

If you’ve watched movies like The Matrix, you’ll know that Neo and his gang used EMP to avoid intelligent machines. This is the same EMP that you will use to stop your obnoxious neighbor. a electromagnetic pulse (EMP), also sometimes called transient electromagnetic disturbance, is a brief pulse of electromagnetic energy. The origin of such an impulse can be natural or artificial and can occur in the form of a radiated, electric or magnetic field or a conducted electric current, depending on the source.

The electromagnetic pulse generator, or EMP generator, is a device capable of generating a transient electromagnetic disturbance that radiates outward from its epicenter, disturbing electronic devices (or frying, depending on its capacity). Some EMP bursts occur naturally, such as electrostatic discharge (ESD), while others, such as nuclear electromagnetic pulse (NEMP), are of human origin.

How to create your own EMP generator

To make your own EMP generator, you will need the following:

  1. Soldering iron
  2. solder
  3. disposable camera
  4. voltmeter
  5. small toggle button
  6. thick insulated copper cable
  7. enamelled wire,
  8. a momentary high current switch.
  9. rubber gloves
  10. and other electronic / electrical accessories

Once you have all the materials ready, follow this step-by-step guide to creating your own EMP device.

Step 1: Get a disposable point-and-shoot camera
Purchase an inexpensive disposable camera such as the Kodak variety sold at the local drugstore.

Step 2: Put on a pair of rubber gloves and open

Put on your rubber gloves to avoid the possibility of receiving a painful shock when opening the camera; its flash capacitor carries around 330 volts when fully charged.

Step 3: Open the frame and locate the large electrolytic capacitor
Using the flat end of a screwdriver, carefully pry up the camera chassis so that it cannot damage the circuit board below. Once opened, locate the large electrolytic capacitor – the black cylindrical-looking component with two wires – and the PCB it’s attached to. Keep in mind that the side of the capacitor with the marks represents the negative terminal.

Step 4: Test the charge of the flash capacitor
Take a voltmeter, set it to the 1000 volt scale, and check that the capacitor is discharged. If the voltmeter does not find a reading, the capacitor is discharged and you can skip step 5.

Step 5: Unload the flash
To discharge the capacitor, we must first activate the flash by inserting batteries and film into the camera and turning on the flash. Then we press the shoot button and immediately remove the batteries to prevent the capacitor from recharging. Use the voltmeter again to ensure complete discharge. If a residual charge persists, place a 100 ohm resistor between the wires to make sure the flash is fully discharged.

Step 6: Remove the PCB and replace its load switch
Remove the PCB from the capacitor and find the on / off button. Peel it off and solder a push button in its place on top of the solder pads to reduce the risk of electric shock.


Step 7: Solder the capacitor

Solder two insulated copper wires to the two terminals of the capacitor and wire one end to a high current momentary switch as shown below. The high current momentary switch can easily be obtained on the Internet. Leave the other end free for now.

Step 8: Form the charging coil

Wrap the enamel wire 7 to 15 turns around a circular object with a diameter of 2 inches. Make sure the wire aligns accurately with no kinks or overlaps. Place double-sided tape around the diameter of the circular object to help you.

Once you’ve created a loop that’s thick enough, delete the object. Now secure the coil with tape but leave two protruding wires to connect the terminals. If you have an iron rod handy, you can slide it through the center of the coil to intensify the generated magnetic field.

Step 9: Connect the coil and switch
Use sandpaper to remove the enamel layer from the tips of the two wires protruding from the coil before attaching them to the other terminal of the capacitor. Then attach the remaining wire to the “on” side of the switch.

The end result will be a PCB with a switch to turn the charger circuit on and off as well as a charging coil which is switched to the capacitor.

Step 10: Charge the EMP generator and fire
Simply reinsert the battery into the camera PCB to provide power. When you’re ready to test your creation, grab the portable electronic device you want to disrupt and flip the switch. Do not simultaneously hold down the load button while triggering the pulse or you may damage the circuit.
