Project description

The UK power industry is in the process of switching from carbon-intensive technologies from the 20e century in a modern and sustainable energy mix. While renewables such as wind, solar, biomass and hydropower accounted for only 7% of the electricity produced in 2010, these sources have grown to 42% of the electricity produced in 2020, exceeding for the first time fossil fuels such as gas (37%) and coal (2%).

The non-routable nature of many renewable sources (i.e. the energy source cannot be easily controlled) is still a cause for concern if 100% energy from renewable sources can be achieved. A renewable resource that is vast and reliable and that could fill this gap has yet to be tapped as much as it should: ocean wave energy. It is estimated that 20% of world energy production (around 30,000 TWh per year) could be covered by the exploitation of wave energy. However, current technology for harnessing ocean waves is complex, inefficient and expensive.

A new development is a wave energy converter (WEC) based on flexible elastomer tubes, which would remove many complex mechanical elements, thus improving reliability and reducing maintenance costs. For this new design to be competitive with wind, solar and hydropower, a number of challenges must be overcome for the materials from which these tubes are constructed. To improve overall efficiency, new materials must be developed that are able to withstand very high stresses, while being flexible and resistant to the harsh environment at sea, which can lead to corrosion, fouling and fatigue. .

This doctorate is supported by industry and applicants will participate in an exciting international research collaboration, with partners from different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds. Entry requirements

A very good First or 2: 1 undergraduate degree with honors or international equivalent; Electrical engineering, mechatronic engineering, EEE, mechanical / materials engineering, mechanical / mechatronic engineering desirable.

Closing Date: Applications must be received by October 31, 2021 for standard admissions, but subsequent applications may be considered depending on remaining funds.

Funding: For UK students, tuition and a stipend of £ 15,609 tax-free per year up to 3.5 years.
